This is a great week for golf fans in New England. Wish I still lived there. In an odd set of circumstances the loyalty of avid spectators will be stretched to the limits. The PGA Tour makes its annual trek to CT to play another typical TPC course. That tournament coincides with the U.S. Women's Open which is being conducted in Newport, RI. at the Newport Country Club a classic layout dating from 1894.
This coincidence creates an interesting golf fan dilemma from a spectator's and a couch potato's point of view. If you know anything about New England, you'll realize that these two events are in close proximity. I don't have the exact mileage by road or as the crow flies, but the two courses cannot be more than a John Daly tee shot apart. I guess if you drive really fast, if that's possible in New England, you might be able to lay claim to the fact that you attended both events in the same day. That could be added to the vast array of fascinating golf statistics that are constantly being brought our way by the media. Ultimately you might have to make the ultimate decision: Which tournament do I attend?
Or you could sit on your couch with the beer and cheese wiz and tater chips and simply toggle back and forth. It'll be simple to watch both unless you get bad timing between the sugary-sweet USGA promos and the Always Broadcasting Commercials network. ABC will be broadcasting the PGA Tour on Saturday and Sunday from 3-6pm EDT while NBC (which should have picked up the LPGA Championship a couple of weeks ago) will be doing the Women’s Open on Saturday and Sunday from 3-6pm EDT.
Of course, if you don't want either, there's always The Golf Channel with lots of infomercials.
Recommendation: Go for the ladies. More interesting and there's a heck of a lot a stake.
