Delaware residential golf resort helping native horseshoe crabs

MILLSBORO, Del. -- A private luxury residential resort in Delaware provides homes not only for its human residents, but for horseshoe crabs as well. The Peninsula on the Indian River Bay, a luxury gated residential community featuring Delaware’s first private Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, is developing its beach, not only for sunbathing, swimming and relaxation, but also to help facilitate seasonal, nocturnal horseshoe crab breeding on the Inland Bays, in addition to the Delaware Bay.

Preliminary data already demonstrates that The Peninsula’s efforts are successful. James C. McCulley IV, of the Environmental Consultants, Inc. (JCM ECI’s) Horseshoe Crab Study at The Peninsula has shown that hundreds of horseshoe crabs have been counted and have laid their eggs successfully on the Inland Bay this season.

Horseshoe crab counts are performed all around Delaware Bay on full moon, new moon and high tide evenings. The last count of the season will take place Tuesday, June 27, 2006.

In addition, The Peninsula’s commitment to nature will come to fruition with its Nature and Exploration Center, set to open in 2008. When completed, it will feature permanent ecological exhibits, an on-site laboratory and ongoing educational seminars in the surrounding wetlands, including visits to horseshoe crab breeding grounds during the appropriate May/June breeding season. Members will be also be able to hike trails to observation points that include majestic water views.

The Peninsula’s developer is Longneck, LLC, a joint venture between Larry Goldstein of Odyssey Development Group, McLean, VA, and Steve and Art Sandler of L.M. Sandler & Sons, Inc., Virginia Beach, VA.
