The Tarheel Junior Golf Tour played it first tournament on January 2009 at Duke University Golf Club. That event was oversubscribed as was the next event that was held at the University of North Carolina's Finley Golf Club.
As tournament fields regulary filled up, more and more of the top junior golfers from across the region started to join the Tarheel Junior Tour. Every event that the tour held in 2009 met the requirements to be included in North Carolina's state as well as Junior Golf Scoreboard's national rankings, making the Tarheel Junior Golf Tour, the only organization to have every event meet such ranking criteria.
With over 790 members the tour's growth is a phenomenal story. "Junior golfers needed a place to play. We gave them great golf courses, with very reasonable entry fees. Our mission is to make high quality junior golf accessible to the best players regardless of thier parent's economic situation. We want the game to grow and the best way for golf to sustain long term growth is through junior golf.", stated Bob Gerard, a Founder and Director of the Tour.
The spring tournament schedule is posted at www.tarheelgolf.org and includes events at TPC Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh, NC, Campbell University, The University of North Carolina, Carolina Trace Country Club, Duke University and North Carolina State University. Winners at select events earn exemptions into AJGA events as well as invitations to regional invitational tournaments.
