ROSCOMMON, Mich. -- Mark Gurnow, general manager of the Forest Dunes Golf Club is tired of hearing the national award-winning course referred to as a "hidden gem," and he has hired Resort & Golf Marketing of Bloomfield Hills to change that image.
"I've been here for three years through three full seasons, and to still hear that term we need to get the word out that one, we exist, and two, this is a very special place," Gurnow said of the golf masterpiece designed by Tom Weiskopf.
Gurnow said he hired Resort & Golf Marketing because of the company's established track record in publicizing other properties around the state, as well as its relationships with national and local golf media.
For Dave Richards, president of Resort and Golf Marketing working for Forest Dunes will be a homecoming of sorts. He and his company helped Forest Dunes attain national attention when it opened in 2002. Golf Magazine selected it as one of the Top 100 courses in America that year while Golf Digest magazine recognized it as the best new upscale public golf course in America.
"We've been involved with Forest Dunes since its inception and are happy to be back working for one of the purest golf courses in the United States," Richards said.
Richards noted that a survey by readers of Golf World magazine recently selected the course the No. 1 public course in the country.
"Those readers merely confirmed what we already know, and we hope to continue getting word out that Forest Dunes is a must-play for anyone who wants to experience the best in golf," Richards said. "The native sand dunes and plants that highlight the course, its location in the Huron National Forest makes it one the most unique courses in the Midwest."
With Gurnow as its on-site representative, the golf club is managed by Troon Golf, the world's top golf property manager of upscale golf clubs and resorts in 31 states and 26 foreign countries.
"Our members come from Texas, Ohio, Arizona, and Florida, so we have managed to get some word out through our association with Troon but not enough within the state of Michigan," Gurnow said.
The general manager said a new team to handle real estate was brought in to handle sales and excitement is building with some new areas of the property that is being offered for sale.
'We have opened up some lots that are in the master plan but where not part of Phase One and we started showing them last year and I believe they are among the best lots on the property," Gurnow said.
One example of the new offerings is an especially attractive area between the 14th hole, a long par 4 with water on the left in front of the green, and the 15th, a long par 5.
