Jason Deegan: "Going for the Green" provides blue print for success

If I ever got truly serious about maximizing my potential on the golf course, I've found just the blueprint to do it.

Right now, my 12-handicap stays frozen from year to year, give or take a stroke or two either way depending on my rhythm, health, confidence and consistency.

The book, "Going for the Green: Prepare Your Body, Mind and Swing for Winning Golf," comes from three people who have come together to identify the elements needed for great golf.

Swing coach Gary Gilchrist brings the technical expertise. Golf trainer Susan Hill handles the fitness angle, something golfers too often overlook. And mental training expert Jeff Troesch brings the insight into what goes on between the ears.

Going for the Green provides advice for:

• Assessing your game. Most of us love to hit shots we're good at, but the reality is we need to practice our weaknesses first.

• Gearing up for competition.

• Making yourself a complete golfer. I'm a straight driver with a good short game, but I need to work on consistency with my irons.

• Finding a way for active rest and regeneration. We have all been burned out by golf and need a break. Here is how to do it without losing all the touch and feel shots that are so important in the short game.

I like the illustrations showing golf-themed exercises that will make your game stronger. How can we hit shots like PGA Tour players if we do not at least attempt to gain their strength and physique?

The book, by Sterling Publishing Co., is available for $24.95.
