PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Phil Mickelson, who suffered a final-hole collapse to finish tied for second in the U.S. Open last weekend, has retained the lead in the 2006 PGA Player of the Year standings.
Mickelson, a two-time winner this year including the Masters and the BellSouth Classic, has collected 78 points to date. His total also includes 20 points for leading the season money list and 18 additional points for his runner-up spot in adjusted scoring average.
Geoff Ogilvy, who picked up his first major championship in the U.S. Open, is second in the standings with 58 points. He collected 30 points for his Open championship, 10 additional points for his win earlier in the year in the Accenture Match Play Championship and 18 points for ranking second on the money list.
Jim Furyk is third with 42 points, while 2004 PGA Player of the Year Vijay Singh and seven-time PGA Player of the Year Tiger Woods are tied for fourth with 36 points.
Australia’s Adam Scott, a non-winner thus far this year, leads the Vardon Trophy standings with a 69.09 adjusted scoring average based on 40 rounds. Mickelson is second with a 69.15 average, and Furyk third at 69.27.
Since 1948, The PGA of America has honored the game's best players with the PGA Player of the Year Award. The award is currently presented to the top touring professional based on a point system for tournament wins, official money standings and scoring averages. Points are tabulated from Jan. 1 through The TOUR Championship, which concludes Nov. 5.
Since 1937, the Vardon Trophy, named in honor of famed British golfer Harry Vardon, is awarded annually to the touring professional with the lowest adjusted scoring average. It is based on a minimum of 60 rounds, with no incomplete rounds, in events co-sponsored or designated by the PGA Tour.
