Dave Marrandette: Annual U.S. Open Awards

Best Newspaper Coverage: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel elected not to send their top notch golf writer Gary D'Amato to cover the U.S. Open, something about budgetary concerns. (Translated: We need to pay our top executive a few hundred thousand more this year so we're not going to give our golf fans a little hometown perspective on perhaps the biggest golf tournament of the year.) Problem is just so happens that Wisconsin native Steve Stricker was the halfway leader. Guess that's what those big execs get paid for – making the right decision at the right time.

Most Annoying Golf Announcer in U.S. Open history: Congrats Chris Berman! The highlight of his annoying and incomprehensible banter was calling Rory Sabatini's eagle on a par 4 was an "eag." Ugh! Only thing worse are those incessant baseball metaphors.

I hate golf; I love golf; I hate golf; I love golf Award: Sergio Garcia. Did you hear the one about Sergio and the USGA official? After endangering the lives of spectators for 32 holes, Garcia finally asks how much of a fine, as in $$$, it would be to launch his driver. Quick thinking USGA official comes up with a better idea, "Why don't you give me the driver and I'll auction it off for a First Tee charity?" Check ebay, I guess.

We gotta go back to the drawing board and make a new driver Award: Nike, Taylor Made, Cleveland and Callaway. Sasquatch went back to the Woods with Tiger. Sergio gave away the Rx 7+ Dynamo 4-speed. And Vijay needed some grass eating contraption that you can only buy on TV. And, finally, with all the chips on the table, the Callaway Excalibur Fusion Dynamo, or whatever, starts pelting spectators.

The Jean Van de Velde Award (We were hoping to never have to present this): Phil Mickelson, Colin Montgomerie, Jim Furyk. (Padraig get honorable mention.) This was not Winged Foot or the USGA. This was just terrible play and decision making under pressure.

Best Lesson Learned about Golf: You might hit it farther with the new technology, but you still have to find it.
