Grayson Murray, a high school sophomore from Raleigh, NC won the annual Tarheel State Junior Championship at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's AE Finley Golf Course. Murray's scores of 70-69 for a 5 under par total, 139, under wet conditions shows why he is ranked a top 50 golfer nationally.
The annual event is hosted by the Taheel Golf Foundation. Despite an early flu season, 70 high school boys competed in an event that saw 15 under par rounds recorded. The high quality of play is not surprising since the state of North Carolina is ranked the 5th most competitive for junior golf in the country by the National Junior Golf Scoreboard. Murray's 2012 graduating class from North Carolina is ranked 3rd.
Murray was followed by runner up Cyrus Stewart, the first round leader whose 4 under par total was helped by a rare double eagle in the first round. Zachary Martin, a high school freshman from Pinehurst, NC placed third with a two day total 144, even par.
The next college campus event for the Tarheel Golf Foundation is November 21-22 at Duke University in Durham, NC. The Washington Duke Inn & Golf Courses on the campus of Duke University is a highly regarded test of golf originally designed by Robert Trent Jones and later modified by his son, Rees Jones. The course is home to the Duke Blue Devil's Golf Teams.
The Tarheel Golf Foundation Junior Tour has over 600 members from 18 states and four countries. The majority of players are high school juniors that aspire to play college golf. Events are open to all juniors 18 and under that have not yet completed high school. Complete results and information are available at www.tarheelgolf.org.
