Poland's Modry Las Golf Course named a top course by Golf World

The spectacular Gary Player designed Modry Las Golf Course was selected as one of the top 100 European golf courses in Golf World magazine's recently published list. This follows by a mere three months the Grand Opening of the course and places Modry Las among the 26 new entries in the magazine's definitive compendium. It is also the only entry from Poland, marking the emergence of Poland as a new golfing destination.

The new course, which is situated outside Choszczno in the West Pomerania region of Poland, overlooks two spring-fed lakes and is surrounded by oak, pine and birch forests. Throughout its 7,272 yards, the par-72 course weaves its way through gently undulating countryside that teams with flora and fauna. Player described Modry Las as "a classy golf course carved in a beautiful, natural landscape. [It's] just an incredible setting".

The magazine asked a panel of golf experts to rank their top European courses based on design, conditioning, history and reputation. With the likes of José Maria Olazábal, Martin Kaymer and Thomas Björn casting their vote, Modry Las was awarded 82nd place - a remarkable achievement for a course opened in July.

"New projects have sprung up in the unlikeliest of places, such as Estonia, Turkey and Poland," commented Peter Masters, Golf World's Top 100 editor. "It seems, even in this time of global economic recession, golf has managed to expand its boundaries."

The meticulously prepared greens and striking bunkering give Modry Las a distinctive look that is visually striking and challenging to play. Arthur Gromadzki, chairman of Modry Las, noted that the Golf World award had propelled the new course to the top flight of European golf courses.

"We are honoured to be included in Europe's top 100 courses especially as we are so early on in our development," he said. "It has always been our intention to create a resort that would compete on an international stage. Bringing in the expertise of Gary Player was the first step in this process, so we are delighted that our foresight has been recognised by the illustrious panel of judges that participated in Golf World's list."

In its first season, Modry Las Golf Club has already hosted a number of Polish PGA tournaments and is working with the Polish government to develop youth golf in Poland.
