PinnacleSports posts odds on Wie qualifying for men's U.S. Open

WILLEMSTAD, Curacao -- After advancing through local qualifying, Michelle Wie will now attempt to become the first woman in history to qualify for the men's U.S. Open at the June 5th 36-hole sectional at Canoe Brook in Summit, New Jersey. Although the 16-year-old golf prodigy has played in eight men's professional events, she's only made the cut once and was hardly dominating when winning her local qualifier by shooting an even-par 72. With Wie only one step away from making golf history, PinnacleSports.com has released odds on Michelle Wie qualifying for 2006 USGA U.S. Open.

The largest sports betting site on the Internet, PinnacleSports.com originally opened betting on Wie competing in the U.S. Open immediately after she won a local qualifier in Hawaii in mid-May. With veteran professionals Mark O'Meara, Billy Andrade, Bernhard Langer, Len Mattice and Tom Pernice all scheduled to participate in the Canoe Brook qualifier, Wie remains a long shot to become the first woman golfer to play in the men's U.S. Open at 7/1 odds. According to PinnacleSports.com, the more likely scenario is that Wie's history making quest will come up short and the 16-year-old will miss the U.S. Open at Winged Foot, currently listed as an overwhelming 2/13 favorite.

"While Michelle Wie is already making her name known as one of the top female golfers in the World, qualifying for the men's U.S. Open is a grueling process and something that no woman has ever accomplished," said Simon Noble of PinnacleSports.com. "Although history is against her, qualifying for the U.S. Open could just be another in the long list of firsts by Wie. If it doesn't happen this year, our customers think it's only a matter of time before Wie will be competing regularly in PGA Tour events and potentially winning titles."
