TUNICA, Mississippi – Nov. 3, 2004 – The United States Tennis Association has selected Tunica National Golf & Tennis Club as one of 15 outstanding new tennis facilities in the United States this year. Tunica National is being lauded for both its tennis facility and its championship public golf course designed by Mark McCumber.
“We are very honored to receive this prestigious award from USTA,” said Keith Evans, Tunica National’s director of tennis. “The vision for this facility was to be a leader in encouraging higher standards for the game of tennis, and the USTA’s recognition is positive evidence of our success in our first year of operation.”
The USTA awards program was established “to stimulate high standards in tennis facilities and to recognize those facilities whose efforts make such a positive statement about the vitality of the game,” according to the USTA. As an award recipient, Tunica National will receive a complimentary one-year Organizational Membership in the USTA and will be permanently listed among past Facility Award winners at the USTA National Tennis Center.
Tunica National, the casino resort destination’s third championship golf course, opened in May and has begun hosting a variety of golf and tennis tournament events. The complex is one of several projects funded by Tunica County, designed to provide visitors and residents additional recreational choices when visiting the area.
Located on U.S. Highway 61 North in Tunica, Tunica National has four indoor tennis courts, which are the only Hydro-Grid Har-Tru indoor clay courts south of Washington, D.C. Har-Tru’s granular surface acts as a shock-absorbing cushion, allowing players to slide into their returns, preventing joint-jarring stops. One of the most impressive aspects of the technology is the sub-surface irrigation and the ability to control humidity indoors. Tunica National also features an 18-hole Mark McCumber-designed public golf course, six-hole par-3 practice course, 8,000-square-foot clubhouse, circular driving range, and golf-training academy.
Murphy’s Grillroom & Bar in the clubhouse offers visitors a casual dining environment with a large-screen television, fireplace and great views. Tunica National Pro Shop offers tennis and golf equipment and accessories, as well as equipment repair and court bookings.
Tunica, an area where cotton, rice, soybean fields and catfish ponds still thrive, is “The South’s Casino Capital.” Located 30 minutes south of Memphis, Tunica welcomes more than 10 million visitors annually to its nine world-class casino resorts, with more than 6,300 new hotel rooms, over 40 restaurants, championship golf, outdoor recreation, museums, outlet and antique shopping, and much more.
