PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Reigning PGA Professional Champion Mike Small of Champaign, Ill., will be one of six PGA Professionals featured in the CBS special "The Road to the PGA Championship," which debuts Sunday, Aug. 2, on CBS, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. EDT. The program will be seen in five separate rebroadcasts, beginning Aug. 8, on Golf Channel.
This one-hour special, marking its fourth consecutive year and hosted by CBS Sports announcer Bill Macatee, will also feature the 42nd PGA Professional National Championship conducted in June, which was the springboard to completing the 20-player delegation that earned a berth into the 91st PGA Championship.
Small, the 43-year-old head men's golf coach at the University of Illinois, captured the 42nd National Championship, July 1, in Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M., and preceded his second national title by earning the 2009 Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year award.
Joining Small in the PGA Championship will be five featured PGA Professionals, who each share a compelling story reflecting their career and quest for competing in the Season's Final Major.
The featured PGA Professionals include: Craig Thomas, 45, and Keith Dicciani, 37, of White Plains, N.Y., the respective PGA head professional and PGA assistant professional at Metropolis Golf Club. Dicciani is planning to marry Thomas's stepdaughter later this year.
The Road to the PGA Championship also features Grant Sturgeon of Oakmont, Pa., an assistant professional at one of America's most celebrated venues, who will make his first major championship appearance following a remarkable second-round performance in the National Championship. Sturgeon, 31, recorded a hole-in-one and a closing birdie that enabled him to make the cut on the number and compete in the weekend field in Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M. He finished tied for eighth place.
Chris Starkjohann, 53, of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Calif., was the Low PGA Professional finisher in May at the 2009 Senior PGA Championship, and is an owner and teaching professional for the Torrey Pines Gold Club & Outings in Encinitas, Calif.
