PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - Legendary Oak Hill Country Club of Rochester, N.Y., the site of many of the most dramatic moments in golf history, has been named the site of the 2008 Senior PGA Championship and the 2013 PGA Championship.
In 2008, Oak Hill Country Club’s East Course will join PGA National Golf Club of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Laurel Valley Golf Club of Ligonier, Pa., and Valhalla Golf Club of Louisville, Ky., as the only U.S. courses to host a Senior PGA Championship, PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup.
“For the past 60 years, Oak Hill Country Club and its membership have proudly maintained the tradition of being a home to major championships,” said PGA of America President Roger Warren. “Many of the most memorable moments and golf’s finest champions have been showcased at Oak Hill. We are excited about Oak Hill being host to the greatest names in senior golf in May 2008, as the Senior PGA Championship makes its first appearance in the state of New York.
“And we anticipate that we also will find tremendous support from the community and membership when the 95th PGA Championship returns to Oak Hill in August of 2013.”
Oak Hill Country Club hosted the 1980 and 2003 PGA Championships won respectively by Jack Nicklaus and Shaun Micheel. In 1995, Europe stunned the United States at Oak Hill by rallying to capture the Ryder Cup on the final day for a 14½ to 13½ victory.
“We are absolutely delighted in having The PGA of America return to Rochester,” said Oak Hill Country Club President Chris Williams. “We are particularly pleased in being the first site in New York State to host the Senior PGA Championship. Having the PGA Championship return in 2013 is absolutely icing on the cake.
“We know that The PGA of America has many great venues to choose from and in selecting Oak Hill, they really are selecting the Rochester community as well. Our resident volunteers, ticket buyers, businesses, government and industry leaders have demonstrated over the years a unique fondness for championship golf. It is very much because of their support that Oak Hill attracts these great events. All of us look forward to the next two in 2008 and 2013.”
The PGA Championship, which enjoys a rich heritage dating back to its inaugural event in 1916, will mark its 88th Championship, Aug. 17-20, at Medinah (Ill.) Country Club.
Many of golf’s greatest champions, from Hagen, Sarazen, Snead, Nelson and Hogan, to Player, Trevino, Nicklaus and Woods, have had their names inscribed on the Wanamaker Trophy, the prize for winning the season’s final major championship.
The Senior PGA Championship was begun in 1937 at Augusta National Golf Club, at the invitation of legendary Bobby Jones, and has since featured the game’s legendary stars that have reached the age of 50. This year’s 67th Senior PGA Championship will be hosted by Oak Tree Golf Club, May 25-28, in Edmond, Okla.
Celebrating its 90th anniversary, The PGA of America was founded in 1916, and is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the game of golf while continuing to enhance the standards of the profession. The Association is comprised of more than 28,000 men and women PGA Professionals who are dedicated to growing participation in the game of golf.
