Jeffrey Kang emerges victorious at the West Junior Open in CA

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. -- Jeffrey Kang of Fullerton, Calif., played a steady final-round Thursday at the West Junior Open. He shot a final-round 3-over-par 75 to finish one shot ahead of Todd Baek of San Diego. Jessica Vasilic of Anaheim Hills, Calif., shot a final-round 3-under-par 69 to come from eight shots back to win at Robinson Ranch Golf Club.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the West Junior Open was a 54-hole stroke play event held on the Valley Course at Robinson Ranch Golf Club. The tournament field featured 72 boys and 27 girls, ages 12-18, from six states, Argentina and Mexico. The Boys Division played the par-72 course at 6,864 yards, while the Girls Division played at 6,137 yards.

After leading every step of the way this week, Kang will take home the trophy. His final-round 3-over-par 75 was good enough for a one shot victory in the Boys Division. Despite the difficult course, he managed to drive the ball flawlessly all week.

"The course was playing pretty tough all week," Kang said. "With how tight it is my driver was the key for me winning this golf tournament."

Baek finished second with a three-day total of 3-under-par 213. Robin Jang of Los Angeles and Alexander Forss of Temecula, Calif., tied for third each with three-day totals of 1-under-par 215. Jordan Lee of Tarzana, Calif., finished in fifth with a three-day total of even-par 216.

In the Girls Division, Vasilic heated up quickly recording an eagle and four birdies against two bogeys to shoot a 4-under-par 32 on the front nine. The highlight of her round came on No. 4, a 505 yard par-5, where she holed out from 40 yards for an eagle three. She attributes her low round of the day to a fantastic short game.

"My chipping and putting were on fire," Vasilic said. "I holed out on No. 5 for eagle then drained 60 footer on the next hole for birdie."

Stacy Kim of Yorba Linda, Calif., finished second with a three-day total of 9-over-par 225. Tied for third was Jennifer Hahn of Henderson, Nev., Anne Cheng of Torrance, Calif., and Monica Petchakan of Encino, Calif., each had three-day totals of 11-over-par 227.
