Sam Bernstein captures top honors at Nemacolin Junior Classic

FARMINGTON, Pa. -- Sam Bernstein of Riverdale, N.Y., took top honors in the Boys Division at the Nemacolin Junior Classic, carding a three day total 2-under-par 214. Suzie Lee of E. Northport, N.Y., continued her lead in the final round to finish first in the Girls Division at even-par-216.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Nemacolin Junior Classic was a 54-hole stroke play event held at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort - Mystic Rock Course. The tournament field consisted of 105 Boys and 38 Girls, ages 12-18, from 23 states, Canada, Indonesia and Mexico. The par-72 course was played at 6,978 yards for the Boys Division and 6,137 yards for the Girls Division.

Bernstein carded only 27 putts in the final round to grab his first AJGA victory. He started off the final day solid after he carded three birdies on Nos. 1, 3, 7 for a front nine score 3-under-par 33.

"On my first 15 holes I was lights out with no bogeys, including three birdies," said Bernstein. "On No. 7 I hit my first shot six inches from the hole for a tap-in birdie. It was kind of my moment!"

Bernstein entered the final day in the lead and understood with the competitive field he could not be complacent but rather had to go for birdies if he wanted to come out on top to take top honors.

"There are a lot of good players here that could have shot par and taken the lead," said Bernstein.

Coming in second for the Boys Division were Sean Bosdosh of Clarksburg, Md., and Austin Romeo of Erie, Pa., both at 1-over-par 217. Peter Eiler of Holland, Pa., and Ji Soo Park of Centreville, Va., finished tied for fourth with three day totals of 3-over-par 219.

Suzie Lee of E. Northport, N.Y., started with birdies on Nos. 1, 2, and 5 to enter the back nine at even-par 36.

"No. 5 was my best hole," said Lee. "Adding, the weather was terrible, it was really windy and the wind would take my ball in different directions making it a difficult round."

Lee's long game contributed to her victory and she posted one of the low rounds of the day in the Girls Division at 2-over-par 74.

Harin Lee of Bayside, N.Y. also carded a final round low score 2-over-par 74 to finish in second place at 6-over-par 222. Sun Gyoung Park of Vail, Ariz., finished in sole possession of third place with a three day score of 11-over-par 227.
