SOUTH SHORE, LAKE TAHOE, Nev. -- World renowned poker player Daniel Negreanu has accepted an invitation to compete in the 20th anniversary of the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament this July, making him the first professional poker player to ever participate in the event.
Negreanu will be looking for "aces" on a different green as he competes with other celebrities, including Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Tony Romo and more, in the three-day, 54-hole Stableford competition, taking place from July 17-19 at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Lake Tahoe, NV.
Negreanu has been playing professional poker since the age of 21. In 1998 he became the youngest World Series of Poker (WSOP) champion, a record which he held until 2004. From there, Negreanu has gone on to win two more WSOP bracelets, two World Poker Tour (WPT) titles and countless other major tournaments. He was CardPlayer's Player of the Year in 2004, and took the Best All-Around Player Award at the 2004 WSOP.
The tournament will be televised live by NBC on Saturday and Sunday July 18 and 19 from 3-6 p.m.
For the fourth year in a row, the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) is the official charity of the American Century Championship. The tournament will help build awareness of the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign, while raising funds for the LAF's cancer survivorship initiatives. Collaborating with the LAF on the 2009 tournament is a natural fit for American Century Investments, given the fact that more than 40 percent of the asset management firm's profits go to fund research for the prevention and cure of gene-based diseases such as cancer.
