Mallorca Classic continues growth

MALLORCA, Spain – Nov. 2, 2004 – The Mallorca Classic will boast a 50% increase in prize money next year with a total purse of €1.5 million on offer when the tournament moves to a new date the week before the Volvo Masters.

The Mallorca Classic 2005 continues its progress towards establishing itself as one of the leading tournaments on The European Tour International Schedule when Pula Golf hosts the event, promoted by Matchgolf, on the Balearic Isles from October 20-23.

The change of date will increase the prestige of the Mallorca Classic as it will be the last event for players to qualify for the Volvo Masters. The event, won in 2004 by home favourite Sergio Garcia, will also count towards The 2006 Ryder Cup points list as well as to the Official World Golf Rankings.

Joan Flaquer, Minister of Tourism for the Balearic Islands, said: “Since the beginning, the support of the Tourist Board has been directed to establish a great event on The European Tour which would serve as a world golf reference to all the tourists that come to Mallorca, and with the thrilling victory of Sergio Garcia in 2004 and the new date on the calendar, we feel we are progressing on the right direction.”

Romeo Sala, President of Pula Golf, said: “Pula Golf has been working for the past two years on the improvement of the course together with Jose Maria Olazábal to give Mallorca an important tournament on The European Tour and to allow the best players in the World come to Mallorca to help the islands become a reference in the world of golf. This three year agreement will help further improve the image of Mallorca.”

Maria José Marijuan, General Manager of Matchgolf, said: “The week before the Volvo Masters is a reference to the best players on The European Tour and this new agreement with The European Tour is an achievement due to the effort and support that the Government of Baleares, the co-sponsors of the Mallorca Classic, Pula Golf and ourselves have placed on the Mallorca Classic since its birth only two years ago.”
