Golf Course Management magazine earns 11 awards at TOCA ceremony

Golf Course Management, the official publication of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), garnered five first-place commercial publication writing awards and six merit awards from the Turf and Ornamental Communicators Association's (TOCA) awards ceremony May 14, in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

The publication gathered more first-place and merit awards than any other publication in the golf course management industry.

First-place awards:

* Terry Ostmeyer, GCM senior staff writer - "H2No" (April) turf feature
* Kelly Neis, GCSAA senior manager of creative services - "H2No" (April) headline writing
* GCM contributor Bill Steele - "Calculating the value of green" (February) environmental stewardship
* GCM contributor Trent Bouts - "Lone Rangers" (December) general features
* GCM contributor Peter Blais - "Up, up and away" (February) product information

Merit awards:

* Darcy DeVictor, GCM associate editor - "In the brick of it" (May) operations profile
* Seth Jones, GCM senior associate editor - "GCSAA's Ladies Man" (July) general feature
* GCM contributor John Fech, Ph.D. - "Too mulch of a good thing?" (March) ornamental feature
* GCM contributor John Fech, Ph.D. - "Too mulch of a good thing?" (March) headline writing
* Seth Jones, GCM senior associate editor - "Honor the land" (August) photography
* Roger Billings, GCM senior manager of design/creative services - "Reaching out" (May) portrait/personality photography

In addition, longtime GCM research section contributors Wendy Gelernter, Ph.D., and Larry Stowell, Ph.D., were honored as TOCA's 2009 Environmental Communicators of the Year.

Also at the meeting, GCM Editor-in-Chief Ed Hiscock stepped down from a two-year term as TOCA's president. He will serve on TOCA's board of directors two more years as immediate past president.

TOCA is composed of editors, writers, publishers, photographers, public relations/advertising practitioners, industry association leaders and others involved in golf course maintenance and other green industry communications.
