Caroline Larsson's Big Break Prince Edward Island dream shattered

ORLANDO, Fla. -- In an episode highlighted by the popular glass break challenge, Caroline Larsson (Orlando, Fla.) was eliminated from Big Break Prince Edward Island in the series fourth episode.

Brenda McLarnon (Charleston, S.C.), Gerina Mendoza (Dallas, Texas) and Eugene Smith (Glen Ridge, N.J.) joined Larsson in an elimination challenge that featured competitors attempting to hit their ball into a point circle, receiving one point each time they were successful from one of four locations. The first three players earning three points received immunity and advanced to the next episode.

McLarnon and Smith earned the required points, leaving the final two, both with two points, to compete for survival. Mendoza applied the pressure with a greenside bunker blast that found the target, forcing Larsson in a do-or-die situation, in which she failed to convert and was eliminated from the series.

Elimination by Episode:
Show 1: Robert Read
Show 2: William Thompson
Show 3: Kim Kouwabunpat
Show 4: Caroline Larsson

“I was shocked and sad to go home,” Larsson said after being eliminated.

Not as startled, though, as those who expected her to win the series. Possibly owning the best credentials of the six females competing in Big Break Prince Edward Island, she was a favorite to capture the $100,000 winner’s paycheck. “I’m a very competitive person when it comes to something that is important to me,” said Larsson, who competed in the 2007 LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament. “Some people see me as a very bubbly person who puts on a game face in competition. I have always been strong mentally, and that is important in this game.”

In her first two seasons on the Duramed FUTURES Tour, Larsson finished 14th and 23rd on the money list, respectively. As an amateur, the Stockholm, Sweden native was a member of the Swedish National Team and later earned All-ACC honors as a sophomore at Florida State in 2004. She is one of only 13 All-ACC selections in school history.

The eight remaining contestants will compete for $100,000 that can provide the winner a means to finance their dream of playing on a Tour for an entire year. Past Big Break champions won tournament exemptions to compete on some of the world’s top professional circuits, such as the PGA TOUR, Champions Tour, European Tour, LPGA Tour, Nationwide Tour and Canadian Tour. Former Big Breakers Tommy Gainey and James Nitties, who tied for fourth in his third TOUR start at the FBR Open, will compete on the PGA TOUR in 2009 while four previous female contestants currently play on the LPGA Tour.

Adding insight to Big Break Prince Edward Island as co-hosts are former PGA TOUR professional Charlie Rymer and Golf Digest Senior Editor Stina Sternberg.

Shot at Mill River Golf Course in Prince Edward Island, it marks the first time a Canadian location has hosted Big Break. Located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence on Canada’s east coast, Prince Edward Island boasts more than 32 courses that span from one end of the Island to the other. One of Canada’s top golf destinations, Prince Edward Island offers other recreational activities, including kayaking and cycling.

The fifth episode of Big Break Prince Edward Island will air Monday at 9 p.m. EST.
