J.J. Holen captures victory at Preseason Junior at Oak Valley

BEAUMONT, Calif. -- J.J. Holen of Castaic, Calif., fired a 67-77—144 tournament total to take medalist honors in the Boys Division at the Preseason Junior at Oak Valley. Bethany Wu of Diamond Bar, Calif., carded a 69-70-139, to run away from the pack in the Girls Division.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Preseason Junior at Oak Valley was a 36-hole stroke-play event held at Oak Valley Golf Club. The tournament field consisted of 72 boys and 24 girls, ages 12-18, from nine states and Canada. The Boys Division played the par-72 course at 6,909 yards, while the Girls Division played at 5,892 yards.

Holen, 16, has his first AJGA victory under his belt. He approached the final round trying to stay composed and collected throughout the round as he faced his toughest competition. As the leader, he didn't know if he would be able to handle the pressure and stay mentally strong.

"I played the day like I was playing in match play," Holen said. "I felt like if I could just stay a couple shots ahead of everybody in my group I would be where I am now."

One-stroke behind Holen in second place, was Keenan Nelson of Murrieta, Calif., with a 72-73—145. Tied for third place at 2-over-par 146 was Chen-Lin Liu of Beaumont, Calif., and Joseph Kim of Irvine, Calif. Rounding out the top five in the Boys Division is Scott Lowe of Calgary, Canada with a 71-76—147.

Wu, 12, came in to this weekend just wanting to stay calm and have fun. She finished the weekend with nine birdies and a smile on her face. Her first birdie of the day came on her fourth hole as she drained a 25-foot putt. She carded three more for the round.

"I was just making my putts and hitting some great shots," Wu said. "I am working to be No. 1 in the Polo Golf Rankings."

In the Girls Division finishing in second was Morgan Thompson of Tualatin, Ore., with a 74-74—148. Coming in third place was Yang Yue Hill of Palm Desert, Calif., with a 74-75—149.
