VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- When the forecast says "70 percent chance of thunderstorms," and the Doppler Radar indicates that you're surrounded by them, you don't expect to get in much golf, much less 18 holes.

Well, today I got lucky, and I'm glad I did.

We played Virginia Beach National, the former TPC club bought by the city of Virginia Beach. If you didn't know who designed the course, which hosts the Nationwide Tour's Virginia Beach Open, you'd be hard-pressed to guess it was Pete Dye. There are no railroad ties, pot bunkers that I remember or anything really super hard about it. Perhaps that's because Curtis Strange was the player consultant. Who knows?

Anyway, I thought it was very fair golf course, plenty interesting and in great shape. It also drains well as Virginia Beach got hit with heavy rain the previous couple of days and there really wasn't any casual water of consequence.

Just as we were leaving the rain came, and that was OK. We retired to the Lynnhaven Fish House, which has been overlooking the Chesapeake Bay for 27 years. I'm not surprised it's been chosen "Best Seafood Restaurant" on the beach for 17 consecutive years; this is pretty good grub. I had the crab cakes, which were excellent, as well as the She-Crab soup.

Now if we can get only get this lucky tomorrow. The forecast is only a 60 percent chance of T-storms.
