ORLANDO, Fla. -- GOLF CHANNEL’s newest original series, Golf in America, will travel coast-to-coast to discover never-before-told stories, larger-than-life characters and inspirational people to capture the spirit of the game of golf.
Hosted by film and television actor Anthony Anderson (Law & Order, Transformers) and premiering June 23 at 10 p.m. ET, the 10-episode series will uncover compelling real-life stories as told through the game of golf. Whether it is a one-of-a-kind golf course situated within the walls of a Louisiana prison, two young phenoms coached by their father who has never played a round of golf, or a golf course affectionately dubbed the TPC at Kirkuk – built and maintained by American soldiers stationed in Iraq – Golf in America will chronicle stories in stunning HD from celebrities and everyday people across the country who are all unified by the sport. GOLF CHANNEL’s Rich Lerner, Kelly Tilghman, Jim Gray, Brandel Chamblee and John Feinstein are among the contributors that will help bring Golf in America stories to life as series correspondents.
“This series is not about putting, tournament golf or traditional news, but rather real stories, real lives and real people that make up the rich fabric of golf in America,” said Tom Stathakes, GOLF CHANNEL senior vice president of programming, production and operations. “We found it fascinating that the various people featured in Golf in America – like soldiers, kids, and celebrities – come from all different walks of life but can share the same passion for the game of golf.”
The series also will profile celebrities, executives and golf personalities, such as superstar Justin Timberlake and his purchase of Mirimichi near his hometown of Memphis, scheduled to become the first platinum certified “green” golf course in the United States; and real estate mogul Donald Trump and his golf empire expanding to Scotland. Also featured in the series will be Hollywood producer Jerry Weintraub, American business legend Herbert Kohler Jr., LPGA rookie Angela Oh, and sports super couple Greg Norman and Chris Evert.
Golf in America episode highlights include:
Myrtle Beach/Flight 1549 - A group making their annual winter golf pilgrimage to Myrtle Beach, S.C., faces a life-and-death experience as US Airways Flight 1549 lands in New York’s Hudson River. The group did not let their brush with death deter them, honoring their golf tradition by returning to Myrtle Beach in March. They were two months late, but even closer after an experience that changed their lives forever.
Congressional Relocation Center at the Greenbrier - Beneath The Greenbrier resort in the hills of West Virginia is a massive underground bunker built during the Cold War that could have served as an emergency shelter for the U.S. Congress in the aftermath of nuclear holocaust.
TPC at Kirkuk - American soldiers stationed in Iraq found time to make themselves at home by building a small golf course in Mosel. After being overrun by insurgents, the soldiers refused to give up, and have since rebuilt the course now dubbed the TPC at Kirkuk.
Fairway to Heaven - When Scott Parlin teed off, his drive ricocheted off a tree hitting his father in the head, causing a massive cerebral hemorrhage. His father died just over an hour later. Parlin will take viewers on an emotional visit back to the scene of the accident, and will describe how he is carrying on his father’s legacy through his own children and through the high school basketball team he coaches.
Golf in America follows the success of the GOLF CHANNEL’s hit real-life series The Haney Project. The Haney Project follows one of the world’s best golf instructors, Hank Haney, in his attempt to improve NBA Hall-of-Famer Charles Barkley’s golf swing. The series was the most-watched premiere episode of a GOLF CHANNEL original series in the network’s history.
