Franco Castro captures victory at Aldila Junior Open in Georgia

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -- Franco Castro of Alpharetta, Ga., finished the Final Round with a 6-under-par 66 to take the home the tournament trophy with a total of 72-66 - 138. Kelly Shon of Port Washington, N.Y., shot a 2-under-par 70 in the Final Round to earn top honors in the Girls Division with a tournament total of 67-70 - 137.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Aldila Junior Open was a 36-hole stroke play event held at The Country Club of the South. The tournament field consisted of 78 boys and girls, ages 12-18, from 21 states and Canada. The Boys Division played the par-72 course at 6,872 yards, while the Girls Division played at 6,130 yards.

Carding seven birdies on the day, Castro stayed consistent in his method. Using his driver, then wedges, and one putt on the green Castro was able to keep the competition behind him. The front nine was better for Castro as he made the turn 4-under. Missing only three greens throughout the day, Castro got up and down two out of the three and saved par. He struggled with the back nine's harder hole locations, but managed to stay ahead.

"The No. 17 par-3 was difficult, I missed the green left," said Castro. " But I got up and down and birdied No. 18, I just didn't let it get to me."

Tied for second with tournament totals of 142 were Jay Vandeventer of Bristol, Tenn., Jack Walsh of Lawrenceville, Ga., Tom Lovelady of Birmingham, Ala., and Billy Kennerly of Alpharetta, Ga.

Course management and a more positive attitude have been the keys to Shon's game this spring. Deciding between an eight and nine iron on the No. 1 fairway, Shon was 130 yards out and the flagstick was at the front of the green. She chose her nine iron and holed out for eagle. Shon had a better start today than yesterday and she believes the weather was the deciding factor.

"The rain made it easier," said Shon. "Yesterday the greens didn't receive the putts, today the rain made them stick."

Tanaporn Kongkiatkrai of Bradenton, Fla., scored a tournament total of 143 to finish in second. Tied for third with tournament totals of 147 were Amy Meier of Rochester Hills, Mich., Shannon Aubert of Orlando, Fla., and Austin Ernst of Seneca, S.C.
