Golf course design company Thomson Perrett has launched a book celebrating Australia’s fastest-growing world-class golf course region.
Golf Courses of the Mornington Peninsula recognizes the increasing interest in the game on the Mornington Peninsula, the 100-kilometre neck of land south-east of Melbourne. This interest has led to the building of many courses in recent years.
The book profiles all 28 courses, and includes fascinating accounts of their history and development, incorporating maps of the area, how-to-play breakouts of the most famous holes and sublime photos from renowned golf photographer Kimbal Baker.
The book was inspired and produced by Ross Perrett, managing director of Thomson Perrett.
This coffee-table publication is organized into a series of essays by writers including Perrett and his business partner, five-times British Open winner Peter Thomson, Michael Wolveridge, Tony Cashmore and Michael Clayton. The foreword has been written by Thomson and the book has been edited by Paul Daley.
Featured are Championship courses like the National Golf Club and Moonah Links – venue of this year’s Australian Open – as well as hidden coastal gems like Sorrento, Flinders and Portsea, and Rosebud Country Club which is carved out of a pine forest.
Golf courses tend to form in clusters, Thomson writes, and as a golfing destination the Mornington Peninsula now rivals the Monterey Peninsula in California, Pinehurst in North Carolina and St Andrews, Surrey and Berkshire in the United Kingdom.
“We have included all the courses on the peninsula in the book, including the smaller ones which give a lot of enjoyment to a lot of people,” says Perrett. “The book will mean a great deal to tourism in Victoria, as we showcase a golfing region that is not only close to Melbourne but far more accessible to golfers than Melbourne’s renowned sandbelt area.”
The hardback book – which runs to 300 pages and measures 28cm x 28cm – is published by Eagles Nest Publishing, a division of Thomson Perrett. It retails for AU $69.95.
