Las Vegas local Zack Thompson wins The Golf Channel Amateur Tour's Western Masters by 5 shots

The Golf Channel Amateur Tour conducted its 2009 Western Masters at PGA West in La Quinta, California on April 18 and 19. This two day event, played over the Nicklaus Tournament Course and the TPC Stadium course, drew more than 350 players from all over the U.S. Each player competed on both courses over the two days.

The Las Vegas Tour was represented by ten local Tour members. The Champions Flight and over all winner was Zack Thompson, with a two round total of four under par (140) over these demanding courses. Thompson fired rounds of 69 and 71 to win by five strokes. The Senior Hogan flight winner was Steve Miller with a two round total of 162. The Palmer flight was well represented by Tyler Vest (3rd place) and James Rasmussen (16th place). Other Las Vegas Tour members competing were Ken Petersen, Todd Jensen, Ray Blackshear, Ben Shorty, Dan Stansbury, Tom Alley, and Garvin Bushell. Also on hand, helping and officiating, were local Tour Directors Mike and Lisa Aschberger.

The Golf Channel Amateur Tour conducts local tournaments all over the U.S. and Canada, as well as regional events and National Championships. Players who join their local Tour are eligible to play in any Amateur Tour event held any where in the U.S. or Canada. Players are divided into flights based on their handicaps, and then play "scratch" within their flights.
