Mater Dei High School golf team surges with tournament victory

SANTA ANA, Calif. -- Mater Dei High School, ranked by Sports Illustrated as the #2 high school athletics program in the nation (2008), announced that the varsity golf team clinched the Diamondback Tournament held at Spring Valley Lake Country Club.

The Monarch's travel to the high desert proved to be a worthy trip. The team posted a 2 under par round of 286. Leading the victory was Brian Campbell who shot a personal best of 66 to claim an individual title and first place.

Seniors and Co-Captains, Matt Morales and Matt Weaver played some stellar golf. Morales shot an even par to tie for third place and Weaver impressed the crowd with a monster drive of 330 yards to win the long drive contest. Other notable scores came from Carter Gaskill and Braden Cluck who both shot a 72 to lead Mater Dei's second team to a third place finish.

"We are looking forward to a very successful season this year. With five returning players and some really talented newcomers, the Monarchs should prove to be even better than last year," said Ollie Martin, Mater Dei Varsity Golf Coach.

In addition to the Diamondback victory, the Monarchs locked in a solid second place finish at the Ayala Tournament, and have an overall record of 5-1, 3-1 in non-league and 2-0 in league play. Last year the talented Monarch squad finished with a respective overall record of 11-3, ranking them #6 in Orange County. This year the team has garnered a #4 ranking. The team is comprised of eight golfers.
