Women's Golf Association honors ASU's Linda Vollstedt

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Nov. 2, 2004 – The Executive Women's Golf Association's Leadership Award, the highest recognition given by the association, has been presented to Linda Vollstedt for the significant contributions she has made to women's golf.

The award, which was inaugurated in 1994, recognizes individuals or companies who have demonstrated leadership, made significant contributions or paved the way for more women to learn and enjoy the game of golf. Past recipients of the EWGA Leadership Award include Golf For Women magazine, Renee Powell, Shirley Spork, Marlene Hagee, Patty Berg, Kathy Whitworth, Alice Dye, Judy Bell, Peggy Kirk Bell and Michelle McGann.

"Linda Vollstedt has demonstrated the highest level of respect and understanding for the game of golf," said Sara Hume, executive director of the EWGA. "As a successful golf coach, mentor and supporter of women's golf, she exemplifies leadership at the highest levels." In her 21 years at the helm of the Arizona State women's golf program, the name "Linda Vollstedt" became synonymous with the world of women's golf.The five-time national coach of the year retired as coach of the ASU Sun Devils' golf team in June 2001, after leading the team to six NCAA championships in the 1990s and as one of 11 head coaches to mentor Sun Devil programs for more than 20 years.

Vollstedt culminated her ASU coaching career by leading the Sun Devils to 10 straight trips to the NCAA championships. In fact, she coached the Sun Devils to first or second-place finishes in 57 of her last 99 tournaments. No fewer than 20 of her former student-athletes have gone on to play at the elite level.

As a result of her efforts, Vollstedt has been recognized by her colleagues with numerous coaching honors, including Golf World Magazine's Top 10 College Coaches of the 20th century.

A native of Portland, Ore., Vollstedt has been involved with ASU for almost 40 years, earning her bachelor in education in 1969 and her master's degree in math education in 1971. Her Sun Devil playing career ran from 1964-68. Today, she serves as the athletic department's director of golf marketing and promotions.

The Executive Women's Golf Association (EWGA) is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to provide opportunities to learn, play, and enjoy the game of golf for business and for life. Founded in 1991, the EWGA currently has 110 chapters and over 18,000 members in the U.S. and Canada.
