CARLSBAD, Calif. -- Cobra Brand Ambassador Geoff Ogilvy
has established himself as a champion who plays big in the world's biggest
events. He only added to this reputation on Sunday at The Ritz-Carlton
Golf Club, Dove Mountain, hoisting the Walter Hagen trophy (presented to
the winner of the WCG - Accenture Match Play Championship) for the second
time in four years. After coolly dispatching five world-class opponents in
the preliminary matches, Ogilvy continued his relentless play in the
36-hole finals. He took the lead with a 6-foot birdie on the first hole of
the match, and never trailed. He owned a 3-up lead after the morning
round, then closed out the match with a 6-foot birdie on the 33rd hole.
It was a dominant performance by the 31-year-old Australian, who ran his
career record at the Accenture Match Play Championship to 17-2, the highest
winning percentage in tournament history (88.23 %). In staking his claim
as the finest match play golfer in the world today, Ogilvy did not trail
over the final 62 holes of the tournament. He was 12-under through 33
holes at the conclusion of the championship match and did not have a bogey
on his card over the last 57 holes.
Among the equipment trusted by Ogilvy for his success at the WGC -
Accenture Match Play Championship is the New King Cobra S9-1 Pro D (10.5)
driver, New King Cobra S9-1 Pro (15.0 and 20.0) fairway metals and King
Cobra Pro MB (3-9) irons. The New S9-1 driver and S9-1 fairway metal lines
are now available at golf retailers.
With the victory, Geoff Ogilvy moves up to No. 4 in the world ranking and
becomes the first player this year with multiple victories on the PGA Tour,
having opened the year with a wire-to-wire win at the Mercedes-Benz
Championship. He now has six career PGA Tour victories to his credit,
including the 2006 U.S. Open and three World Golf Championship titles, the
most of any player but one. Ogilvy will defend his title in two weeks at
the WGC-CA Championship at Doral in the WGC-CA Championship.
Cobra Brand Ambassador Camilo Villegas also exhibited some strong play in
the Accenture Match Play Championship. Villegas, whose equipment included
a New King Cobra S9-1 Pro S (10.5) driver, Speed LD F (3 and 5) fairway
metals, King Cobra Pro CB (5-9) irons and a Carbon CB 3-iron, advanced
easily through his first three matches before an unfortunate draw in Round
4, where he faced and ultimately lost 2-and-1 to his fellow Cobra Brand
Ambassador and eventual champion, Geoff Ogilvy.
With the winner's check of $1.4 million, Ogilvy jumped four spots and now
leads the 2009 PGA Tour money list with $2,672,077, surpassing $2 million
in earnings for the fourth consecutive season. Not only does Ogilvy now
lead the PGA Tour money list and FedEx Cup standings (1175.50 points), he
also leads the European PGA Tour's Race to Dubai with 1,543,168 euros.
Another convincing performance from a formidable champion…and business as
usual for a brand focused on developing innovative, high performance golf
clubs.
