Rod Perry captures a victory at Srixon PGA Tournament Series

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Left-hander Rod Perry of Port Orange made up six strokes the final round with the day's low score, a five under par 67, to win a Srixon PGA Tournament Series event Dec. 12, at the PGA Country Club.

Perry finished at 140 but he had to wait about 45 minutes to see if it was going to be good enough for the victory. It was as Ken Martin of Wellington, Fla., and Mark Brown of Brookville, N.Y., both playing in the final foursome, tied for second at 141 on closing scores of 74 and 71. "It was worth the wait," Perry said.

A teaching professional at Daytona Beach Municipal Golf Club, Perry, 35, got off to a good start with four birdies on the first five holes, then bogeyed the sixth, made the turn at 33 and had three birdies and a bogey on the inward nine. "Yesterday, I was 3-over-par after five holes, enroute to a 73," Perry noted. "That's how golf is sometimes."

It was Perry's second Tournament Series title, the first coming in December, 2006, at Martin Downs in Palm City. He won the PGA Stroke Play Championship in 2007 at the nearby PGA Golf Club.

Earlier this year, Perry won the North Florida PGA Section Match Play and the East Central Chapter championships but was just as pleased about making the 36-hole cut after qualifying for the Ginn sur Mer Classic, a Fall Series event on the PGA Tour in Palm Coast, Fla. "Making the cut, that was really exciting," Perry said.

It was the second time this week that Martin had let a share of the first round lead get away. He shot 66-70-136 Monday and Tuesday at the PGA Golf Club and lost a playoff to Mike San Filippo. "I just played awful today," Martin said after recording three birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey at the par-4 sixth hole.

Brown, winner of the Srixon opener Dec. 2 at the PGA Golf Club, made five birdies and four bogeys but missed a birdie putt to tie Perry from inside 10 feet at the 18th hole.

There was a full field of 104 starters for the $35,000 event. The 32nd annual Tournament Series ends with two events, Dec. 15-16, at the PGA Golf Club and Dec. 17-19, at The Florida Club in Stuart, Fla.
