PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Mark Brown of Brookville, N.Y., and Brian Cairns of Waterford, Mich., each collected a victory and $5,000 first-place checks in the first two events of the 32nd annual Srixon PGA Tournament Series, contested at The PGA Golf Club.
Brown rallied from a three-stroke deficit with a closing 5-under-par 67 on Dec. 2, at the Wanamaker Course, finishing with a 36-hole total of 6-under-par 138. That was two strokes better than Tim Weinhart of Duluth, Ga., the 2007 season money-leader who closed with a 72-140 in the 104-player field.
Cairns birdied his final two holes on Dec. 9 to capture the Series second event at Hammock Creek Golf Club in Palm City, Fla.
It was Brown's second straight Tournament Series victory. He won the final event of the 2007 season on the third playoff hole at the nearby PGA Country Club. Earlier this year, Brown won the PGA Stroke Play Championship on the Wanamaker Course.
Brown, 42, is the PGA head professional at Tam O'Shanter Golf Club in Glen Head, N.Y. Overall, it was his fourth Tournament Series title. He earned $5,000 from the $35,000 purse. In 36 holes, he made an eagle, nine birdies and five bogeys.
Weinhart was the leading money winner last year with $12,412.50 in six starts. He bogeyed the last two holes Tuesday after four birdies and a double bogey earlier in the round. On Monday, Weinhart made five birdies and one bogey. He received $3,500.
Cairns closed with a second consecutive 6-under-par 66 at Hammock Creek, finishing with a 132 total and two strokes better than Mike Northern of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Samuel Kang of Rockaway, N.J. Each had consecutive 67s for 134 and each made six birdies and a bogey the final round.
Cairns, 44, the head professional and owner of the Highland Golf Center in Milford, Mich., earned his second Series victory over a 10-year period. He was runner-up in the Michigan PGA Player of the Year standings.
The 32nd annual Srixon PGA Tournament Series has attracted players from 24 states and Brazil. Among the contenders for season money leader honors are Weinhart, and 1995 PGA Professional National Champion Steve Schneiter of Sandy, Utah, who was last season's stroke average leader.
The remaining Series events are: Dec. 11-12 at the PGA Golf Club's Ryder Course; Dec. 15-16 on the Wanamaker Course at the PGA Golf Club and Dec. 18-19 at The Florida Club in Stuart, Fla.
