SAINT HELENA ISLAND, S.C. -- Representatives from Dataw Island Club announced that the Club's seventh annual Santa Claus Open Day collected more than 150 toys for children of deployed military personnel assigned to VMFA 122 (Werewolves) and VMFA 273 (Sweathogs) from the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) in Beaufort for the holidays.
The Santa Claus Open Day consisted of a golf cart parade, toy drive for Beaufort-area children, a Santa's luncheon for MCAS families with members currently deployed overseas, the Santa Claus Open Golf Tournament for Dataw members and the Santa Claus Open dinner for Dataw Island members.
The golf cart parade and toy drive consisted of more than 20 residents and their guests driving their Christmas-themed golf carts and the collection of unwrapped toys for Santa's toy drive. The Santa's luncheon gave MCAS children the opportunity to have lunch with Santa and receive a toy from the toy drive held earlier in the day.
This year, approximately 55 children and 40 adults from the MCAS took part in the event.
"We are very proud of our members who took part in the recent Santa Claus Open Day and helped to provide Christmas toys for the children of Beaufort-area armed service personnel," said Silvia Lalinde, director of membership and marketing of Dataw Island Club. "Hosting charity outings such as this is a positive way to help the community and to assist those who are sacrificing for our freedoms."
