The Territory in Okla. hosts collegiate Division II super regional

Florida Southern (South) and host school Cameron University (South Central) have advanced out of the NCAA Division II Super Regional played at The Territory near Duncan. Sixteen schools battled each other and the championship golf course over 54 holes for the right to play in the National Championship May 16-19 at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, W.Va.

Central Oklahoma (South Central) and Florida Southern (South) led their regions after the first two rounds but were briskly challenged on the third and final day. A 1-under par 287 allowed Cameron to overtake Central Oklahoma and advance to the national tournament.
According to Cameron Head Coach Jerry Hrnciar, the Super Regional is the most intense tournament of the year because everyone is trying to get to nationals, which leads to a lot of stress and tight play. And he said the quality and challenge of The Territory made their task all the more demanding.

“The Territory is a hard course to sustain that level of play,” Hrnciar says of its championship venue value. “It rewards very good play and penalizes bad golf shots. The risk-reward par-5s tempt you to go for it, but you have to be smart enough to not be too aggressive. It requires you to hit every club in your bag.”

The Territory – a Randy Heckenkemper-designed course which hosted the Oklahoma State Amateur last year in its first full season and will host the State Senior Amateur in August – proved to be a worthy adversary for the best collegiate golfers at the Division II level.
“I think the scores speak for themselves,” says Tim Johnson, Director of Golf at The Territory. “If you’re driving the ball well and hitting the greens, this course can be scored upon. If you’re missing the fairways and greens, The Territory will get the best of you.”

Florida Southern (-7 857 total) held off a hard-charging Lynn University (-3 861) to advance. The remainder of the South Region rounded out with North Alabama (+11 875), Rollins College (+13 877), West Florida (+13 877), Barry University (+32 896), Valdosta State (+36 900) and Eckerd College (+48 912).

Cameron University (+10 874) was the only South Central team to break par in the final round and overcame a nine-stroke deficit to advance to the National Championship. St. Mary’s of Texas (+12 876) placed second, while Central Oklahoma (+14 878), the leader after the first two rounds, finished third. St. Edward’s (+14 878), Northeastern State (+25 889), Abilene Christian (+26 890), Western New Mexico (+50 914) and East Central (+57 921) rounded out the field.

About The Territory
The Territory is a golf and country club community located in Southwest Oklahoma. The course, which opened in 2004, has hosted the Oklahoma State Amateur and will welcome the Oklahoma State Senior Amateur tournament this year.

With five sets of tees – ranging from 4,845 to 7,110 yards – the modified target-golf course offers playability and enjoyment to players of all ages and skill levels. The greens are an A1-A4 creeping bentgrass blend, the tees, fairways and roughs are Tifsport Bermudagrass and native vegetation frames the playing corridors.

Prospector’s Ridge, the first planned phase at The Territory, is in the early stages of development. One home is completed and now occupied and more custom homes are under construction. In addition, on 16 of the 47 lots, Tuscany style homes are being developed by Majestic Homes, Inc. Prices of lots available range from $68,000 to $135,000. Were a similar, high-quality property like The Territory located in the nearby Dallas-Fort Worth area it would likely cost three times as much.
