A ROOKIE WINNER…K.J. Choi spoiled Stephen Ames' bid to make it three straight victories in the LG SKINS GAME and earned the title in 2008 by sinking an 11-foot birdie putt on the final hole Sunday. The birdie gave Choi two more LG SKINS and $270,000 to bring his two-day total to $415,000 and six LG SKINS. Choi is the first rookie to win since Stephen Ames turned the trick in 2006.
EVERYONE CASHES IN…All four players shared in the $1 million LG SKINS purse. It was the first time since 2002 that each of the four players took home some cash. Ames walked off with $250,000 and six LG SKINS, Mickelson was third with four LG SKINS and $195,000 and Mediate was fourth with two LG SKINS and $140,000. Rocco Mediate and K.J. Choi are the 32nd and 33rd players to have ever played in the LG SKINS GAME.
ROOKIE CHOI…K.J. Choi's $415,000 earnings as a rookie ties for the third greatest total in LG SKINS GAME history. Fred Funk took home $925,000 in his rookie year of 2005 and Ames had the second greatest mark at $590,000 in 2006. Choi tied Colin Montgomerie, who won $415,000 in 2000.
STEWART ONLY THREE-PEATER…Stephen Ames was bidding to become only the second player in the 26-year history of the event to win back-to-back-to-back titles. The late Payne Stewart is the only one to accomplish the feat in 1991-92-93.
AMES MOVES UP…With his earnings of $250,000, Stephen Ames moved past Mark O'Meara on the all-time LG SKINS earnings list. In three years, Ames has earned $1,515,000 and only Fred Couples has won more money at $4,225,000. O'Meara won $1,320,000 in five LG SKINS appearances.
AMES LOVES SUNDAY…Stephen Ames does his best work on Sunday at the LG SKINS GAME. He has won $1,490,000 on the last day of competition in three years and only Couples has won more money on that day with $3,430,000 playing over 14 years. Ames won the 10th hole to start the day, cashing in on $250,000 and five LG SKINS.
TWO MORE EAGLES…K.J. Choi matched Phil Mickelson's Saturday eagle and thus earned the 12th eagle in LG SKINS GAME history, when he eagled the 14th hole on Sunday. Fred Couples has the career record for most eagles in LG SKINS GAME history with three and Lee Trevino is second with two, one of which was the only hole-in-one in history in 1987.
KJ CHOI JOINS MICKELSON IN LG ELECTRONICS FAMILY…
Like Phil Mickelson on Saturday, K.J. Choi eagled the 14th hole, a 519-yard par 5, and earned more than a $70,000 LG SKIN. His five-foot eagle putt earned him a complete LG Home Entertainment package including plasma and LCD HD TV's, home theater audio systems, LCD computer monitor, Blu-ray player and complete kitchen package including French door refrigerator, range, dish washer and front load washer and dryer and three LG mobile phones including the new AT&T Smart Phone. Total value of the LG package is $25,000. Mickelson eagled the fourth hole Saturday and won the same package plus a $25,000 LG SKIN.
MEDIATE STRIKES IT RICH ON 16TH HOLE FOR LG PACKAGE…
Rocco Mediate finally broke through on the 16th hole to take two LG SKINS and $140,000. Mediate was the final player to tee off on the hole and he got it inside of both Phil Mickelson (nine feet) and Stephen Ames (six feet). Mediate put his shot to within 2.5 feet on the 181-yard par-3 hole. Mediate earned the LG package of an LG French Door refrigerator, steam dish washer, range and microwave oven.
CHARITY WINS AGAIN…As is customary, all four players have agreed to donate 20 percent of their winnings ($200,000) out of the $1 million purse to their favorite charities.
