WASHINGTON D.C. -- Building on its success as the premier Pro-Net Tour in the Mid-Atlantic, the Tournament Golf Association of America (www.tgaatour.com) is proud to congratulate Rob Heilig for winning the most prestigious event on its schedule, the season-ending Tour Championship.
Competing in his second full season on the premiere Pro-Net tour in the Mid-Atlantic, Rob bested a stellar field of TGAA Tour professional net golfers over 54 holes at the Virginia Oaks Golf Club in Gainesville, VA from October 10th-12th. Rob finished with a final score of net 217, or four over par net, and beat the 2006 Tour Championship winner, Kevin Boynton, by five strokes. Rob was one of only two TGAA Tour professional net golfers to post a single round net under par for the entire tournament.
In speaking with Rob after the round, it was evident that he was tremendously honored with the victory. In catching up with the winner after the round, he was very proud of what he had accomplished: "this is a truly amazing victory. To have my first career TGAA Tour victory come at this event is so special that I don't know if I can really tell you how I feel. To have to sleep on the lead, not only after the first round, but the second as well, was a lot harder than I thought. I have a great appreciation for those that do this as their career. If I had to choose a moment when I thought something special might happen, I would have to say that it was the hole-out from the middle of the fairway on hole 14 (the number 2 ranked hole on the course). That shot, along with a chip-in for birdie on 16 (two holes later), greatly helped me shoot net 68 on day 1. I had to remind myself that this was only the first day and a lot can still happen (as evidence by his net 78 the next day). I was able to experience what every competitive golfer dreams: to play in the final group of the biggest tournament of your career, to know that your fellow playing competitors will do their best to apply the pressure and to be able to play a solid round of golf when it is needed the most."
Heilig wanted to offer an additional comment - "I cannot thank enough, those at the TGAA Tour, who make these events possible. There are many of us who have always dreamt of playing competitive golf at the professional level. There are a few players out here who have had the opportunity to play college golf and may have felt that they had the ability to take it to the next level. However…maybe it was because of family…or career…or a reality check that caused a shift in their priorities. The TGAA Tour has allowed me the opportunity to live my dream of playing professional golf on a very competitive Pro-Net tour, while still maintaining a work-life balance with my full-time career and family. I get to play on many golf courses throughout the Mid-Atlantic that, because of one reason or another, I otherwise might not play. The best part is that, as a pro-net golfer on the TGAA Tour, I get to play these courses and compete for $1,000+ first place checks on a Saturday or Sunday and, in the case of this event (the Tour Championship), a few thousand. I am a high single-digit handicap and, because of the proprietary handicap system they use, I have the chance to be competitive with those golfers closer to scratch and those with handicaps in the mid-teens or higher. I cannot wait until next year so that I can defend this title!"
For his efforts, Rob took home the first place check of $3,000 and the beautiful 2008 TGAA Tour Championship trophy. He also punched his ticket to the tour's 2009 season-opening event, the TGAA Tournament of Champions, which will be held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in mid-February. Rob will also have his named inscribed on the main TGAA Tour Championship trophy that is displayed at the TGAA Tour's headquarters in Gainesville, VA.
