ORLANDO, Fla. -- Golf Channel announced a partnership with Moxie Pictures, a media company specializing in filmed entertainment, that will produce a first-of-its kind documentary that will air on the network in 2009 to commemorate Black History Month.
Uneven Fairways will bring to light the little-known, but rich history of African-Americans in golf through never-before-seen archival footage and revealing stories of the men and women who stood up to prejudice and endured indignities just to be able to play the game at its highest level.
Based on the books Uneven Lies by Pete McDaniel and Forbidden Fairways by Calvin H. Sinnette, Uneven Fairways will tell the story of both the innovators whose place in golf history has never been adequately acknowledged, and the stalwarts who challenged the status quo and played their way into public consciousness and the annals of golf.
Executive Produced by GOLF CHANNEL's Jay Kossoff and Keith Allo, Uneven Fairways will be co-produced by Moxie Pictures' Dan Levinson and Robert Fernandez - whose credits include the Academy Award-winning documentary The Fog of War. The documentary will be co-written by Levinson and McDaniel - also a senior writer for Golf Digest - and directed by Levinson. Randall Poster and Search Party, a sister music company of Moxie Pictures, will handle music supervision. Poster is one of the most celebrated music supervisors in film today with more than 50 movies to his credit.
GOLF CHANNEL will televise Uneven Fairways in high definition on Feb. 11. Additional vignettes, produced as part of the effort will air on the network's Web site (www.golfchannel.com), on demand and on the channel throughout February.
"Uneven Fairways will be one of the most compelling programs we will air in 2009," said GOLF CHANNEL President Page Thompson. "These are inspiring stories of golfers who overcame great odds just to create a tour where they could compete. It's a fascinating and important story, and we are all proud to tell it on GOLF CHANNEL."
Moxie Pictures released the following statement: "We are pleased to be collaborating with GOLF CHANNEL on such an important story. The men and women featured in Uneven Fairways were true trailblazers who played golf out of the love of the game. It is gratifying to be able to bring their stories to a large audience through the GOLF CHANNEL."
