NEW YORK -- It was announced that the ADT Golf Skills Challenge, NBC's situational golf competition featuring PGA Tour pros in the unique, shot-making format, will return to the legendary Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club in Aventura, Miami. Now in its 17th year, the event will be taped in front of a private gallery on November 3 and is scheduled to air on NBC Sports over New Year's weekend, December 27 and 28.
The Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club will again host all ancillary activities in a cooperative arrangement with NBC Sports and longtime title sponsor, ADT Security Services, the largest provider of electronic security services with corporate headquarters located in Boca Raton, Fla.
One of golf's most unique events, the ADT Skills Challenge is second only to The Skins Game as the longest running event from golf's so-called "Challenge Season." It is etched on the calendar as the only golf on network TV in the final weekend of the year, when the sport is in its off-season. NBC devotes four hours of coverage over two days each December.
"The Fairmont Turnberry Isle's Soffer Course is one of the most spectacular and most challenging in all of South Florida," said John Koch, president of ADT, North America. "ADT is looking forward to returning to Turnberry Isle this year as it is an ideal backdrop for an event of this caliber. The unique format and star-studded lineup has made the ADT Skills Challenge one of professional golf's most anticipated events."
Similar to last year, this year's event will feature four professional golfers in a team format with the full field to be announced at a later date. Over the years, the ADT Golf Skills Challenge has featured the biggest names in golf, including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Phil Mickelson, Nick Faldo, Padraig Harrington, Paul Azinger, Nick Price, Jason Gore, Annika Sorenstam, Natalie Gulbis and Paula Creamer.
In recent years, celebrity challengers tested their skills against the pros, with an all-star list of current and former professional athletes including Dan Marino, John Elway, Jerry Rice, Roger Clemens, Sterling Sharpe and Mark McGwire. McGwire astoundingly won the competition in 2003, outperforming a field of Azinger, Norman,
Faldo, Harrington, Peter Jacobsen, Colin Montgomerie, Dudley Hart, and Rich Beem.
The 2008 ADT Skills Challenge will be played on The Fairmont Turnberry Isle's Soffer golf course, redesigned by World Golf Hall of Fame recipient Raymond Floyd. The course exemplifies the best of Florida golf, featuring lush, meticulously manicured grounds accentuated with a variety of elevation changes, contoured fairways, sharp changes within holes and strategically-placed water features. A spectacular, 64-foot high waterfall provides an unforgettable finish on the signature 18 hole island green.
The competition will again be staged at the par-5, 18th, set against the breathtaking waterfall backdrop of the Soffer course.
"We're thrilled to host the ADT Skills Challenge again as this incredibly prestigious event brings tremendous exposure to The Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club and our championship Soffer golf course," said David Feder, managing director.
"Our 18 hole has proven to be among one of the most challenging shots in the history of this event, providing a level of difficulty for the players that really turns up the heat on the competition," continued Feder.
