Chris Baldwin: Ohio State fans even more embarrassing than Buckeyes in 35-3 loss to USC

Is Ohio State's 35-3 loss to USC made any better because it was so predictable?

No. But the classless fans who root for the Script Ohio because they were unfortunate enough to be born in the state that's biggest industry is handing out speeding tickets managed to make a 32-point beatdown even more embarrassing. Buckeye backers did this by coming up with excuse after excuse long before tonight's opening kickoff.

The saddest thing about that 35-3 is that by about Tuesday of this week no one who rooted for Ohio State thought they had a chance either. So they whined about missing running back Beanie Wells, the most overrated and insignificant absence in recent football memory. Or they whined about the fact that no one respects the way they kept beating up on the hapless Big Ten to get to national championship games, where they were promptly blown out by the first legit good team they played those whole seasons. (Luckily, the USC on their schedule will save everyone from having to watch another one of those this January).

You'd think a program that stole a national championship because of the worst call in the history of officiating (that phantom pass interference penalty against Miami) would be a little more humble and just happy to be there.

In fact, Buckeye fans should be giving USC coach Pete Carroll thanks tonight. Not because Carroll held the Trojans back in the fourth quarter in an attempt to not humiliate the Buckeyes even further. Because Carroll agreed to schedule this game against a clearly inferior opponent rather than pencil in somebody tough - like let's say, San Jose State.

What does this all have to do with golf you ask?

Ohio State-USC was the featured game this past week in TravelGolf.com's new weekly On Campus series. Too bad that Ohio State fans became so wimpy once a game they had talked trash about for more than a year actually approached.

What's worse than 35-3? Abandoning your team when it becomes obvious it's out of its league. It turns out that Ohio State fans have even less resolve than Detroit Lions’ supporters.
