LAKELAND, Fla. -- Noted American golf course architect Ron Garl announced that his firm, Ron Garl Golf Design has been contracted to design the Lekki Beach Golf Resort course in the Nigerian city of Lagos. It will be his first design on the African continent. Memberships are $250,000.
“Our team looks forward to this challenge,” said Garl who has in excess of 200 designs around the world. “Golf is a relatively new game in Nigeria, but it is rapidly growing in popularity due to the infusion of business people from Europe and North America. I see the Lekki Beach Golf Resort as a symbol of the rise of worldwide popularity of the game.”
The golf course sits along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. In fact, plans call for the construction of four of the holes to abut the beachfront. In all, the course will stretch to 7,220 yards and will also have a state-of-the-art practice area where golfers can work on both their long and short games.
“We’ve long believed in the necessity of a well-designed practice area,” said Garl. “The more golfers improve, the more they want to play and that puts the game in a healthier situation for everyone.”
Lekki Beach Golf Resort project manager, Steven McFarlane, feels there are many possibilities for dramatic holes on the course.
“This is a great piece of land,” offered McFarlane. “The developers have given us enough land along the ocean to create a very dramatic experience for golfers of all skill levels. We believe that this course will be highly regarded with the esteemed golf courses on the African continent.”
While the Lekki Beach Golf Resort is Garl’s first work on the African continent, he’s certainly no stranger to the international scene. Three of his designs have been named “The Best New Course” in Canada. He currently has a 27-hole project called Nine Dragons outside of Shanghai, China under construction. His Alpine Golf & Sports Club in Bangkok, Thailand was the venue for the Johnny Walker Championship in 2000 (won by Tiger Woods) and 2004. He has just completed the design on Royal Gems Golf City, also in Bangkok. In addition, he has designs in Central America and the Caribbean.
“Golf is truly an international game,” said Garl, “and it is our aim to bring the highest quality golf facility to the entire world. We want everyone around the world to be able to experience the thrill and enjoyment of our great game.”
