World Golf Hall of Fame members to welcome new class

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Oct. 27, 2004 – Four members of the World Golf Hall of Fame have been personally selected by the 2004 Class of Inductees to welcome them into the Hall at this year’s Induction Ceremony on Monday, November 15.

JoAnne Carner will introduce Marlene Stewart Streit, Ben Crenshaw will present Tom Kite, Greg Norman will bring in Isao Aoki and Gary Player will welcome Charlie Sifford.

Additional Hall of Fame members planning to be in attendance for this year’s ceremony are Amy Alcott, Judy Bell, Deane Beman, Patty Berg, Sir Michael Bonallack, Pat Bradley, Donna Caponi, Beth Daniel, Sandra Haynie, Tony Jacklin, Carol Mann, Arnold Palmer, Nick Price, Louise Suggs and Kathy Whitworth.

Aoki, elected on the International ballot, selected Australian golfer Norman to introduce him as the second Japanese player to enter the Hall of Fame. Norman, who became a member of the Hall of Fame in 2001, first played with Aoki in the United States in 1981 and the golfers developed a lasting friendship. Hisako "Chako" Higuchi, the first Japanese member of the Hall of Fame, was inducted last year.

Elected on the PGA Tour ballot, Kite chose Hall of Fame Ambassador Ben Crenshaw as his presenter. Crenshaw and Kite met when they were 11 and 13, respectively. Since that time the two played for the same University of Texas golf team (and were 1972 NCAA co-champions), belonged to the same club, learned from the same legendary teacher and Hall of Fame member Harvey Penick, and joined the PGA TOUR the same year, 1973.

Selected in the Lifetime Achievement category, Sifford will be introduced by Player, a longtime friend and World Golf Hall of Fame Global Ambassador. The first African-American to play full-time on the PGA Tour, Sifford chose Player as his presenter for his support, encouragement and camaraderie through their years together in golf. Also, a personal message from Tiger Woods will be included in a video vignette, conveying the importance of Sifford’s efforts for minorities in golf.

The first Canadian to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, Streit selected Carner as her presenter. Streit defeated Carner in the 1956 Women’s Amateur, but in 1966 Carner defeated Streit after 42 holes, the longest final match in U.S. Women’s Amateur history. As serious competitors in the past, Streit and Carner now enjoy a lasting friendship

PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem and LPGA Commissioner Ty Votaw will address the current state of their respective Tours and a live performance by the cast of off-Broadway’s Golf: The Musical will celebrate the fun, humor and elation of golf. The 2004 World Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will air on The Golf Channel Monday, Nov. 15 at 8 p.m.
