MUNCIE, Ind. (March 27, 2006) -- Michael Lunsford, president and owner of WLT Corporation, announced the sale of The Players Club Golf Course in Yorktown to Ken & Judy Myers and David & Bridget Myers, effective March 24th.
Lunsford, who owns Coldwell Banker Lunsford Real Estate in Muncie, commented, "Since I want to focus solely on my real estate businesses, I've been interested in selling The Players Club.
I've been looking for the right opportunity, new owners who will continue to maintain a high level of operation and customer service. The Myers family is the ideal fit - they are local, know the golf course business, they're "people people," and have plans to improve the course.
David Myers has a degree in biochemistry and is an expert in the technical aspects of course management and maintenance," Mike added, " It was a completely local transaction - Chris Caldwell of Mutual Federal Savings Bank arranged financing."
Ken Myers and his wife Judy, along with son David and his wife Bridget, own and operate Maplewood Golf Club, an 18-hole, 138 acre course along 700 South in Delaware County. They have owned Maplewood since 1993.
Ken and David Myers also own Myers & Son Quality Custom Homes, a builder of high-end custom homes in East Central Indiana. "We're excited about buying The Players Club and serving a new group of Muncie-area golf enthusiasts.
The Players Club is a well-designed course with great drainage. Initial plans call for a systematic upgrading of the grasses, with David's goal of eventually converting all fairways to bent grass," advised Ken Myers.
The Players Club Golf Course was built in 1990 by Mike Lunsford, J. Roberts Dailey, Joe Allardt and Jay Allardt. The public course layout was integral to the well-planned and successful Woodland Trails residential and condominium development.
The 18- hole course sits on 141 acres and carries a course distance of 6926 yards. The facility features a modern club house with a well-equipped pro shop, snack bar, banquet rooms and locker area.
The course also includes a driving range and practice greens. The challenging course was designed by Gene Bates, who worked many years with Jack Nicklaus in course design and development.
Bates currently designs golf courses with Fred Couples in Couples Bates Design.
As a public course, The Players Club was chosen as the "Best Golf Course In indiana Under $50 Per Round," in 1998 and 1999. Ball State golf teams call The Players Club their home course, along with Muncie Central High School and Heritage Hall golf teams.
The Players Club has hosted many well-known tournaments and outings through out the years, including: the Muncie central High School Invitationals; IHSAA Golf Regionals; Muscular Dystrophy Tournaments; Chamber Cups; B.S.U. Invitationals; State Amateur Qualifiers; and hosted the IHSAA Girl's State Tournament in 2005.
Many corporate, club and church golf outings are held at the Players Club. David Myers advised, "For the upcoming golf season, current Players Club membership plans will remain in effect, but we're working on some innovative ideas for 2007 - for both The Players Club and Maplewood." Perry Dotson serves as head professional at The Players Club, assisted by Matt Heiden. Rhonda Reed will continue to manage the pro shop and snack bar.
