Blogger Bill Wolfrum wasn’t the only one upset about the World Golf Rankings. It was quite the topic of conversation here at the Fields Open, and just about every reporter was asking just about every player their thoughts.
And while the PC answer was always something like, “It’s so exciting to have a ranking system like this, and hopefully they’ll provide an accurate reflection of the talent on this Tour,” the true story was this: everyone hated them. Off-the-record players, American reporters, Korean reporters, Japanese reporters—with few exceptions, everyone I talked to thought they were “a little off.” Annika number 1, of course. Paula Creamer number 2, okay. But part-time golfer Michelle Wie as number 3 in the world? What?
So let’s take a look-see at the rankings, compared to the finishes at this week’s full-field Fields Open.
Annika didn’t play, but I think it’s safe to say she keeps her number-1 spot. Creamer, ranked number 2, finished T11. Cristie Kerr, ranked 5th, finished T9. Morgan Pressel, who explained in a press conference that she would be ranked 5 had she been considered a new golfer, finished T11. Ai Miyazato, ranked 6th, finished T24. Lorena Ochoa outperformed her ranking of 7th to finish T4.
The only golfer who finished exactly at her ranking? That’d be Michelle Wie. Ranked 3rd, placed 3rd. I wonder how long people will keep complaining about her ranking.
