The inaugural Australian Golf Writers Association State of Origin Golf Challenge held recently between two six man teams from New South Wales and Victoria at the Corowa Golf Resort was an outstanding success.
The event was held over three days on the 27 hole complex with foursomes played on the first, head to head stableford on day 2 and handicap matchplay on the final day of the tournament.
The Corowa Golf Resort is to be congratulated for the way that the course was presented on the three days and all players were of the opinion that the event will be the forerunner of bigger things to come for the club which is nestled on the banks of the Murray River.
Another big thanks you was extended to the Victorian and New South Wales Golf Associations who assisted both teams with sponsorship and uniforms, Volkswagen Australia, Srixon Australia and DINT Putters who provided the perpetual trophy a magnificent 22 carat gold putter in a glass case.
The two teams were made up from golf writers from both States with Michael Court The Golfer Senior Correspondent for New South Wales leading his team of Steve Keipert and Rohan Clarke from Australian Golf Digest, David Allen Executive Director of the NSWGA, Phil Clark from VW Australia and Barry Gentle from 2GB Sydney.
AGWA Secretary George Begg who the golf writer for Star Newsgroup Melbourne led the Victorian team of Brian Meldrum from Golf Victoria the official journal of the Victorian Golf Association, Garry Kennedy the editor publisher of Hacker Quarterly and the Golf Course Guide, Martin Blake golf writer from The Age, Robert Vanderzalm from The Golfer (Victorian/Tasmanian editions and Mark Harding from The Sunday Herald Sun.
Victoria came out winners after the three days victorious by 8 1/2 matches to NSW's 6 1/2. The next event is expected to be held once again at Corowa in 2008.
