ATLANTA (Jan. 10, 2006) -- Arrowhead Pointe at Lake Richard B. Russell opened in July, 2004 to rave reviews and has quickly become one of the most popular courses in northeast Georgia. To prove that point, the Bob Walker designed course located just north of Elberton was just named the first runner-up to America's Best New Affordable Public Course for 2005.
The 6,800-yard Arrowhead Pointe is situated on a peninsula within the state park and the water views are stunning, with ten of the 18 holes skirting Lake Richard B. Russell. Walker's design has been compared to the more expensive courses at nearby Lake Oconee because of the challenging layout and the scenic vistas. One exception to that comparison is that there are no visible lakefront houses from any vantage point on the course, consistent with the state park golf course theme of "no crowds, no houses, no noise." Additionally, lakeside cottages make Lake Richard B. Russell State Park one of Georgia's best stay and play locations.
Ron Whitten of Golf Digest wrote, "in a state park system with a superlative set of golf courses, Arrowhead Pointe could become the highlight."
In addition to Arrowhead Pointe, the other most recently built golf course in the Georgia state park system made the illustrious "America's Best" list. Meadow Links at George T. Bagby, south of Columbus, was named 6th Best New Affordable Course when it opened in 1998. This Willard Byrd design is one of the state's best-kept secrets, with several holes boasting miles long views into neighboring Alabama. The 60-room lodge located on the state park completes the laid-back resort setting.
More than 150 new and remodeled golf courses nationwide were nominated for this year's Golf Digest ranking. Ten courses are included in each category, including private, affordable public (green fees of $50 or less), upscale public (green fees in excess of $50) and remodel.
Golf Digest has conducted America's Best New Courses rankings since 1982. Its panel of more than 800 low-handicap male and female golfers nationwide played and evaluated (at their own expense) nominated golf courses that opened between May 1, 2004 and April 30, 2005. Golf courses were rated on shot values, design variety, memorability, resistance to scoring and aesthetics. The average scores for each criterion were combined and totaled to determine the winners.
Arrowhead Pointe is privately-managed by CGL of Savannah. The eight courses were developed over the past 40 years and placed in various state parks to improve the quality of life for local citizens and provide visitors to Georgia an opportunity to play golf in a beautiful, natural setting.
