Titleist Pro V1x loyalist Vijay Singh proved once again why he is among the
world's greatest players when he fired a tournament best 7-under par 66 to
force a playoff with the two-time defending champion at the season-opening
Mercedes Championships. Singh, who played two groups ahead of the eventual
winner in the final round, took the lead temporarily with a birdie on the
72nd hole, but posted a runner-up finish when his playing partner converted
an up-and-down birdie out of the bunker on the first extra hole. Both
players finished regulation at 8-under 284.
Pro V1 player Vaughn Taylor improved his score each day, shooting
74-73-72-71 to finish T4.
Lucas Glover, one of five full-line Titleist Staff players (in addition to
Jason Bohn, Ben Crane, Brad Faxon and Robert Gamez) in the field, recorded
the first hole-in-one at the Mercedes Championships since the event moved
to the Plantation Course at Kapalua in 1999. The ace on the 203-yard 8th
hole, which earned Glover a 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG, was delivered
with a Pro V1x golf ball and Titleist Forged 735.CM 5-iron. Glover
finished solo sixth.
At the 28-player, winners-only field, Titleist topped the golf ball count
with 16 players, four times the nearest competitor with 4. In addition to
capturing the golf ball category, Titleist tied the iron count lead of five
players, and won the wedge count with 16 players. Titleist was a close
second in drivers and putters with six each.
Jason Bohn continued to play the Titleist Pro Titanium 905R 460cc prototype
driver after putting it in his bag with success at last year's Deutsche
Bank Open. He also carried the Forged 695MB prototype irons for the first
time in competition this week. Bohn, who also relies upon the Pro V1x golf
ball, finished T11 in Driving Accuracy, T12 in Greens in Regulation and T15
for the tournament.
Robert Gamez switched to the Cameron Circa 62 prototype putter from the
Cameron Futura and finished among the Top 10 in both Putts Per Round and
Putts Per Green in Regulation.
