What's the biggest difference between college football and golf? Well, quite a few actually, but for our purposes here I think it's all about the kids. Golf at least makes an effort at trying to keep the game attractive to youth, with all its various youth programs.
College football does everything to prevent young fans from getting into the game.
Last night's national championship game, for example. The Texas-Southern Cal was a great game, by all accounts. But, I doubt seriously there were many youngsters allowed to stay up late enough to watch all of it.
This game should have been played New Years Day, but the powers that be wanted to make it "special" and so moved it to a Wednesday night, a work-night for adults and school night for kids. This is ridiculous.
Holding the national title game mid-week is an absurd move, and it gives a little insight on why the BCS system is so screwed up. Hold it New Years Day at 4 p.m. when everyone can watch it. I think Congress should investigate the BCS, and give them IQ tests while they're at it.
