Club Car nears completion of Precedent recall

(Dec. 12, 2005) -- Club Car has announced that 92 percent of Precedent golf cars in the U.S. that were identified as having a potential problem in their pedal return spring assembly have been repaired and are back in full operation. The remaining vehicles, which are mostly privately owned, are being addressed as quickly as Club Car officials can coordinate the repair process with owners.

More than 70,000 Precedent vehicles sold between October 2003 and June 2005 have been examined and repaired at U.S. customer locations by teams of Club Car engineers and technicians from authorized dealers and distributors.

“I'm extremely proud of the proactive way in which this program was conducted and the straightforward manner in which we communicated and dealt with customers,” said Phil Tralies, president and CEO of the Augusta-based manufacturer. “Based on the feedback we've heard from customers, they also appreciated the quick response.”

After learning of the issue in July, Club Car informed the Consumer Product Safety Commission and cooperated with the CPSC in issuing a “recall alert.” Club Car set up a project team to define the problem and identify corrective actions regarding ongoing production and customer needs.

“Safety, quality and reliability are paramount in any product we manufacture,” Tralies said. “We believe our actions demonstrated the importance we place in those values and in our relationship with customers.”

The recall alert was issued after Club Car received two reports of golf cars having difficulty braking due to their accelerator pedals sticking. Minor injuries were reported in one instance. The company has received no other such reports.
