Fundraiser for U. Mass turf program honors Sherwood A. Moore

The second annual Dr. Joseph Troll Turf Education Fundraiser was held recently at Cape Cod National Golf Club in Brewster, Mass., and the sold-out event raised more than $45,000 for the turf program at The University of Massachusetts.

This year's tournament honoree was Sherwood A. Moore, CGCS. University officials were on hand to present Moore with the award. Moore is perhaps the most prominent Stockbridge School of Agriculture alumnus in golf course management. The 92-year-old Moore's family and friends were in attendance at the Wequasett Inn tournament dinner.

“In addition to several outstanding honors and decorations, Sherwood A. Moore, CGCS, is without question one of our greatest Massachusetts turf alumni and arguably the greatest golf course superintendent ever,” said Steve Curry, president of the Alumni Turf Group. Curry added, “This is going to be the start of a great annual tradition of honoring inspirational and accomplished alumni of the turf program at the University.”

The fundraiser was initiated last year as a means to raise money for the new Dr. Joseph Troll Turf Research Center. It was held at Hickory Ridge Country Club, and brought in $72,000 (through a university matching program) for the new research building. This year's funds are eligible for a similar match of university funds.

The 2006 Joseph Troll fundraiser will be held Oct. 23 at Westchester Country Club in Rye N.Y. Joseph Alonzi, CGCS, will host the event.

The Alumni Turf Group, formed in 2005, is made up of turf professionals who also are alumni of the University of Massachusetts and the Stockbridge School of Agriculture. Contact www.alumniturfgroup.com
