iClub and MIT to hold golf-technology conference

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (Dec. 5) -- iClub, a motion-capture and presentation products company that enables golfers of all levels to play better golf consistently, today announced it will co-sponsor a conference with MIT's Center for Sports Innovation. The conference will present the latest in golf technology and research that holds great promise for impact in 2006 and beyond. The conference will be held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on February 17 and 18, 2006.

iClub is inviting a number of companies to present research documenting the benefits of their technologies to improve the golfer's game -- as measured by greater consistency, improved shot distance, and enhanced enjoyment of the game.

GolfTEC, the nation's largest group of golf learning centers, will present its research resulting from the combination of motion-capture, web-based lessons, and digital-video. "Technology has increased visibility into the intricacies of our students' swings, which has enabled us to pinpoint and communicate areas for improvement in a way not previously possible," said Joe Assell, CEO of GolfTEC.

Body Balance for Performance, whose 48 centers have provided fitness training with a focus on golf for the past 25 years, will explore how technologies rapidly improve golfer performance through a better understanding of body motion. StretchMate, Dynamic Balance Systems -- DBS, and other companies will also discuss how their technologies are advancing the game.

Director of MIT's Center for Sports Innovation, Kim Blair will present new research results in concert with many of the nation's top teaching golf professionals, including the PGA Director of Instruction, Rick Martino. "The professionals are using science and technology to discover, refine, and demonstrate the effectiveness of various teaching methods," said Dr. Blair. "We are very interested in how technology can yield simpler and appealing golfer learning processes, because, after all, effective and enjoyable learning is the real goal of teaching."

The majority of invited teaching professionals have been recognized among Golf Digest's 50 Greatest Teachers and Golf Magazine's Top 100 Greatest Teachers. A list of research topics and participants will be released in upcoming weeks.

The technology conference will also include a keynote address and panel discussions that will focus on technology's effectiveness in golf learning, including accessibility and cost factors. Participants of different viewpoints will address the use of golf technology from a practical perspective.

"Technology's impact upon golf to date has been great, but uneven," said Satayan Mahajan, iClub CEO. "Club and ball design and manufacturing improvements have had deep impacts over the years, but many technologies have not had great impact, and are sometimes limited to elite golfers. We are excited to help structure a program that will investigate technology's real ability to make the game of golf more easily learned, played at higher levels, and with a greater sense of player satisfaction."
