Oct. 19, 2004 – Wilson Golf has introduced two new drivers to tempt consumers, the Wilson Staff Pd5 and Wilson Staff Dd5 Drivers. Both models are built using Nano-Carbon crowns, titanium bodies and graphite shafts enhanced by new Nano Technology that Wilson believes, will set them apart from any other driver on the market today.
Both multi-material drivers share similar characteristics to improve their respective performance, according to Wilson, by implementing cutting edge Nano-Ti head construction and Nano Tech graphite shafts, as well as a Plasma Welded face, and Weight Pads towards the rear sole. The Nano-Carbon Crown is a carbon composite material reinforced with nano-sized (nanometer = one billionth of a meter) particles to enhance overall composite structure.
Basic unidirectional carbon composite is lighter than titanium or steel, but by nature unreinforced resin exists between the individual carbon fibers. An unreinforced resin layer is combined with Nano particles, allowing the carbon fibers to work more effectively together to improve the performance of the overall carbon composite structure, Wilson said.
The stronger, more durable Nano-Carbon Crown maintains the lightweight characteristic and allows for more weight to be placed in the preferred low and deep position in the driver clubhead, producing a higher launch, lower spin and longer distance.
"Our goal is to re-establish Wilson Staff as an aspirational brand that translates into integrity and trust in the minds of all golfers," said Angus Moir, Global Business Director, Wilson Golf. "In order to accomplish this goal, Wilson Golf must produce the highest quality equipment to improve performance on the course, and that is exactly what golfers will discover when they test the Wilson Staff Pd5 and Wilson Staff Dd5 drivers."
Currently in the bag of Padraig Harrington, the 400cc.
The W/S Pd5 (Performance Driver) is designed for the accomplished golfer seeking maximum distance without sacrificing creative shot shaping. The Irishman came from three strokes back in the fourth round to win the Linde German Masters and register the first official Tour victory for the new Wilson Staff brand and the new Wilson Staff Pd5 Driver.
The W/S Dd5 (Distance Driver) features a 460cc. clubhead with a larger clubface desired by players seeking maximum distance and the ultimate in forgiveness.
"The ultimate goal in designing golf clubs is maximizing the use of available weight," commented Ed Hlinka, Director of Development for Wilson Global Golf R&D. "In the role of a driver, moving the center of gravity away from the face and toward the sole results in the golf ball being launched at a much higher angle and with much less spin leading to longer distance. Capitalizing on the weight savings from the Nano-Carbon Crown and the Plasma Weld face, we were able to move 13 percent of the head weight, to the desired low and back position."
The Pd5 model features a .350" shaft tip that allows players the creativity to work and shape shots, according to Wilson, while the Wilson Staff Dd5 utilizes a wider .428" tip to provide more torsional stability to resist twisting at impact and produce longer and straighter drives. In addition, both the W/S Pd5 and W/S Dd5 will feature an exclusive Golf Pride grip constructed with a new soft compound, with a Wilson Staff side logo and Wilson Staff Shield grip cap.
The Wilson Staff Pd5 will be available in lofts of 7.5°, 8.5°, 10.0° and 11.5°, while the Wilson Staff Dd5 will offer three loft options of 8.5°, 10.0° and 11.5°. As with all Wilson Staff products, the drivers will be available on a limited basis in mid-October, with full availability nationwide in early 2005. The suggested retail price for both the W/S Pd5 and W/S Dd5 is $499.99.
