Tiger Woods captures record sixth Vardon Trophy

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - Tiger Woods closed out yet another landmark season in his career Sunday by surpassing Hall of Famers Billy Casper and Lee Trevino and winning a record sixth Vardon Trophy, one of the most prestigious competitive awards based on a player's season-long performance.

Woods, who clinched a record seventh PGA Player of the Year Award on Sept. 27,2005, finished the season with two major Championships and six overall titles. He dominated the Vardon Trophy race with a 68.66 Adjusted Scoring Average, basedon 74 rounds.

Vijay Singh, the 2004 Vardon Trophy and PGA Player of the Year, was runner-up with a 69.04 Adjusted Average, after 109 rounds. Jim Furyk was third with a 69.27 Adjusted Average, based on 93 rounds.

Woods preceded his current feat by winning five consecutive Vardon Trophies from 1999-2003. Casper was a Vardon Trophy winner in 1960, 1963, 1965, 1966 and 1968,while Trevino captured the award in two separate decades, winning during 1970-1972, 1974 and 1980.

Since 1937, the Vardon Trophy, named in honor of famed British golfer Harry Vardon, is awarded annually by The PGA of America to the touring professional with the lowest Adjusted Scoring Average. It is based on a minimum of 60 rounds,with no incomplete rounds, in events co-sponsored or designated by the PGA Tour. The Adjusted Score is computed from the average score of the field at each event.

The PGA of America, founded in 1916, is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the game of golf, while continuing to enhance the standards of the profession. The Association is comprised of more than 28,000 men and women PGA Professionals who are dedicated to growing participation in the game of golf.
